A
                Think about it
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do before a fire breaks out can save a life. For example, people should know the safety measures to take before opening a hall door during a fire. Also, make sure everyone knows how to unlock doors that may be in the escape path. At times, a key is needed to unlock a door from the inside. So, keep the key in the lock. Or, you can put the key on a key ring and put it where it can be found easily.
If you live in a flat, know the ways you can use to get out. Show everyone in the family these paths. Remind everyone of the importance of using stairways or fire escapes, not lifts.
From most homes and lower floors of a block of flats, escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by a window with the least chance of serious injury.
In a home fire, windows are often the only means of escape. The second floor window sill is usually not more than 13 feet from the ground. An average person, hanging by the finger tips, will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building. Roll away from the building when you land.
Windows are also useful when you’re waiting for help. Often you’ll be able to stay in the room for several minutes if you keep the door closed and the window open. Keep your head low in the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From the roof, a person can either drop to the ground or await rescue. Dropping onto sidewalk or pavement might end in injury. Bushes, soft earth, and grass can help to break a fall. A rope ladder should be considered when the drop is too great.
In a town where the fire department acts quickly, it may be best to wait for rescue. Close the doors and wait by an open window for help. Shout for help. Be sure to close the door before opening a window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room.
56.We can learn from the passage that windows are __________.
  A. easily broken         B. easy to catch fire
  C. good escape paths       D. useful to put out a fire
57.If you happen to be in a room during a fire, it’s a good idea to ________.
 A. open a window        B. use the lifts
 C. stand quite still        D. put out the fire
58.We can learn from the article that in a home fire______.
A.people should close the window and open the door
B.soft earth can reduce the chance of being injured

The Earth shook on October 8.At 8:50 a.m., an earthquake rocked several countries in South Asia. Within minutes, thousands of lives were lost and entire villages broken into pieces. Slight earthquakes from the great quake were felt in Afghanistan, India and Parkistan. Officials fear that the number of people who were killed could top 40,000.
The worst damage was done in northern Pakistan. The epicenter(震中)of the earthquake was near Muzaffarabad, in Kashmir, a troubled mountainous area that is controlled by both India and Pakistan.
A Huge Blow
“It was so strong that I saw buildings shaking. It was terrifying,” said Hari Singh, who works near New Delhi. Big apartment buildings in many cities fell down during the quake, and entire villages were destroyed in some countryside.
The search for survivors lasted days after the quake. Some affected areas are hard to reach even in the best of conditions. Stormy weather slowed rescue efforts. Landslides(泥石流)blocked roads, and heavy rain made it difficult for planes to land.
Rescue workers were unable to travel to some hidden mountain villages. Even in cities, millions of survivors were helpless without food, water, shelter and electrical power. “I can’t wait for the food to be delivered properly,” said Ali Khan, a construction worker in Muzaffarabad. “I need it badly, and I’ll take it.”
The quake also damaged hospitals and left people without clean drinking water. Health officials fear that such conditions could lead to the spread of disease.
Working Together
When the weather cleared, trucks, helicopters and planes delivered food, water and medical supplies to the hardest hit areas. The hospitals that were still standing opened their doors to care for thousands of injured survivors.
About 30 countries took part in the effort of rescue. U.S. Secretary of State condoleezza Rice visited Parkistan. “The United States stands with its friends in Pakistan and India, just as they stood with us after Hurricane Katrina” she said.
India and Pakistan have a history of bitter fighting. They have fought for many years over who should control the troubled Kashmir. Recently, the two countries have tried to improve their relationship. After the earthquake, India offered help to harder-hit Pakistan. Pakistan accepted India’s aid. The two nations will try to put aside their differences to work together to bring aid to the destroyed area.

B.They are necessary in news reports. D.They provide more important information.

Dear Sirs,
You twelve thousand ‘Smart’ watches were received by our company this morning. However, we wish to make a number of complaints(抱怨,不满)concerning the serious delay in delivery and your failure to carry out our instructions regard to this order.
It was firmly pointed out from the beginning that the delivery date had to be less than six weeks from the original order, in order to satisfy our own customers’ requirements. While we appreciate that delays in production are occasionally unavoidable, we must point out that the major reason why the order was placed with your company was that we were assured by you of its simplicity, and that your existing supply were high enough to ensure immediate shipment. Late delivery of the goods has caused us to disappoint several of our most valued customers, and will have an unfavourable effect on future orders.
The second complaint concerns the difference in colour between the watches we ordered and those delivered. It was stated clearly in the order that watches in combinations of green/purple and orange/purple only were required. However, only half the watches in the delivery received are of the colours specified. Our Hong Kong agent informed you of the importance of following our instructions exactly, since we consider there to be only a limited market in this country for watches of other colours at the present time. Any watches that are not of the specified colours will, of course, be returned to you.
We are also somewhat concerned about the rather poor quality of the goods received, since it is obvious that the watches that finally arrived have been made from not good enough materials and have been produced to a lower standard than those in the sample(样品).We have also found that a number of the watches do not appear to be working. Whether the latter problem is due to poor production, or damage in transportation is not yet clear, but we should like to point out that we feel this matter to be entirely your fault.
As a result of the above problems, therefore, we feel that the most suitable course of action is to return to you unpaid any of the goods considered unsatisfactory. We shall also, of course, be forced to reconsider whether any further orders should be placed with your company.
We look forward to your early reply.

Children will be encouraged to develop their emotions(情感)in school and learn about manners, respect and good behavior in order to encourage students to go to classes and improve learning.
Fifty schools across six counties have been sent advice covering emotion-related subjects that ought to be taught in secondary schools and activities that could encourage class discussions.
The Government has started the pilot after several primary schools reported a drop in “serious events” since receiving the “emotional intelligence” help.
Cynthia Moss, who founded the Emotion Intelligence Project, has said, however, that the move presses the duty of parenting on to schools and puts a further pressure on teachers.
In June, the Department for Education and Skills sent out 221 pages of advice to thousands of primary schools, covering 14 areas, under the titles “new beginnings” getting on with falling out” and “good to be me”.
Teachers are not expected to have separate classes in emotional knowledge, nor for children to be examined on them, but to feed the advice through everyday classes and raise awareness(意识)of good behaviour.
John Dunford, the secretary-general of the Secondary heads Association, yesterday agreed that it was the duty of schools to help children to understand “emotional intelligence.”
“It’s not fair to say that parents are failing. Some are, of course, better than others,” he said, “but schools are not just academic institutions(学术机构)and they have always tried to help children grow up with a good emotional understanding of people around them.”
Of ten Southern schools, eight reported reduced truancy(逃学),nine reported fewer fixed-term serious events and at least seven reported improvements in learning in English and math.
In Plymouth, three schools reported a “drop in serious behaviour events.”
However, a spokesman for the national Union of Teachers said that teachers did not need to be given extra parental duties: “This concentration on schools adds up to some parents’ belief that their children are someone else’s duty.”

Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completed a university degree or diploma course could find a good job quite easily. Companies toured the universities, competing with each other to persuade graduates to join them. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.
Most jobs organizations have provided three stages for graduates to follow in the process of achieving a suitable job; recognizing abilities, matching these to available chances and presenting them well to future employers.
Job seekers have to make a careful judgment of their abilities. One area of judgment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, confidence, leadership and caring for others. An honest judgment of personal interests and abilities such as creative or scientific skills, or skills developed from work experience, should also be given careful thought.
The second stage is to study the chances available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. To do this, graduates can study available job chances and information in newspaper or they can visit a job office, write to possible employers for information or get in touch with friends or relatives who may already be holding a particular profession. After studying all the various choices, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various jobs.
Good personal presentation is necessary in the search for a good job. Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors. Where additional information is asked for, job seekers should describe their abilities and work experience in more depth, with examples if possible. They should try to balance their own abilities with the employer’s needs, explain why they are interested in a job with the particular company and try to show that they already know something about the company and its activities.
When graduates are asked to attend for interview, they should prepare properly. By finding out all they can about the would-be employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer.
There will always be good job chances for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to achieving a good job is to be one of them.
71.“Those days are gone, even in Hong Kong” suggests that in Hong Kong______.
A.there is no good job at present
B.finding a good job was easier in the past
C.it’s easy for companies to employ graduates now
D.everyone has an equal chance of finding a good job
72.According to paragraph 3,job seekers should________.
A.show the employer they have balanced abilities
B.compare their own abilities with the employer’s need
C.give a balanced description of what the employer needs
D.provide information about personal attitudes and values
73.Which of the following does Not the author suggest?
A.Graduates have to take part in competitions to achieve a good job.
B.Get information about a number of jobs before making comparisons.
C.It is better for interviewees to be honest than to pretend to understand.
D.Examine the jobs available and how these will be affected in the future.
74.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To tell us where to find a good job.
B.To try to persuade us to find a good job.
C.To inform us of the way to find a good job.
D.To tell us the process of finding a good job.
75.What can we infer from the final paragraph?
A. Determined, skilled and able people can easily find a good job.
B. The secret to a good job is to possess skills, determination or ability.
C. People with the right qualities should always be able to find a good job.
D. Graduates should develop at least one of these areas to find a suitable job.

In my opinion, we’d better set up a statue of a young girl student, who is in a pose of sitting on a chair and reading a book attentively. The appearance of the statue must be lovely, friendly and energetic. She looks to be absorbed in reading and seems to have a strong desire for study.
If such a statue is set up in the garden, it will encourage our students to work hard and remind us that we should always fix our attention to lessons.

M: No. I’m not. I’m interested in some sweaters.
W: All our sweaters are in this section. What do you think of this one here? It’s made of cotton.
M: Hmm, it looks nice, but I’d like to have something warm for the winter.
W: Maybe you would like a heavy wool sweater. How about this one?
M: I think that’s what I want. How much is it?
W: It’s…seventy-five dollars plus tax.
M: It’s a little expensive.
W: Hmm, since you like it so much, I can bring down the price by 10 percent. That’s the best I can offer.
M: That’s good. I’ll take it.
W: OK. Is there anything else I can get for you?
M: No, that should be it. Thank you.

W: I’m afraid not.
M: OK. We’ll start slowly. Which type of exercise do you enjoy doing?
W: I like doing physical exercises to music, but I hate jogging. I don’t mind doing some weight-lifting, though.
M: Great, that gives us plenty to work with. How often can you work out?
W: Twice or three times a week would be good.
M: Why don’t we start with a physical exercise class twice a week followed by a little weight lifting?
W: Sounds fine to me.
M: You’ll need to start slowly, and build up gradually to three or four times a week.
W: OK. What kind of equipment will I need?
M: You’ll need a leotard and some sneakers.
W: Is that all? How do I sign up for the classes?
M: We’ll need you to join the gym and then you can choose which class fits your timetable best.
W: Great! I can’t wait to get started. Thanks for your advice.
M: No problem. I’ll see you in physical exercise class!

W: Hello, listeners. Welcome to Henton Hospital Radio. Before our music program at four, I’m going to repeat some of our hospital rules. The visiting hours are in the afternoon from 2:30 to 3:30 and in the evening from 7:00 to 8:00.But remember only two people can see you at the same time. Sorry about that, but you can imagine what would happen it we didn’t have these rules.
The other rules are about our hours. We start pretty early— you might not be used to that. We wake you at 6 o’clock, breakfast is at 8 o’clock, and lunch is at noon; there’s tea at 3:30 and supper is at 6 o’clock. You can se the no-smoking sign—we won’t allow smoking in the treating room. However, if you do need to smoke, there are special areas where it’s allowed.
You will find the radio switch on the wall near your bed, with your headphones, if you want to listen. It’s our own hospital radio wishing you a speedy recovery.
