A letter to Edward,a columnist(报刊专栏作家)
Dear Mr Expert,
I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home.I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now,at age 20,I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.
Here’s the problem:several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine so much so that they make mine theirs.
It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me.But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.
I enjoy having my friends here sometimes—it makes the place feel comfortable and warm—but this is my home, not a party house.I was old enough to move out on my own,so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隐私)?
Joan
Edward’s reply to Joan
Dear Joan,
If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.
And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛), you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with—or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Danver,I was driving to my parents’ home in Messouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it.They would accept no payment;so when I got home;I wrote them a note to say thanks,I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you,and it meant a lot,he said.

Short and shy,Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team.“Football, tennis Cricket—anything with a round ball,I was useless”,he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England’s rural Devonshire.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him.At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually,Saunders set his mind building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18,he ran his first marathon.

The house was quiet at 5 am and Tim’s mother was asleep.Only the sound of the big freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt of the cave last night.
The purring(轻微颤动声)of the freezer had been the sea.Tim pulled on a sweater and put some apples into his schoolbag. It was too early for breakfast. He’d eat after he’d been through the cave, sitting on the rocks and staring at the sea.He wished he had a proper pack. His schoolbag would have to do.

Gone to Michael’s.Back tonight,Tim.
The sky was high and soft and light outside, though the sun still wasn’t up.Even the highway up the hill was quiet as he made his way down the street. The wind from the sea was fresh and sweet.

Over the first rocks, along to the point,Tim glanced back. The beach was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky.He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it.He had to force himself to go closer. Why was it so much more mysterious(神秘的)now?

54. A

60. A

61. A

62. B
根据第二封信中的“...you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with...”
66. A
根据第一段“...where I was planning to stop and visit a friend.”

73. A

76. A

The following year,he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean.Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s school of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older man’s cold-water exploits(成就).Intrigued,Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future.

What else?Sandwiches—but his mother might wake up if he started pulling out bread for sandwiches, she’d want to know why he had to leave so early. He settled for some biscuits, and left a note stuckto the table:
Gone to Michael’s.Back tonight,Tim.
The sky was high and soft and light outside, though the sun still wasn’t up.Even the highway up the hill was quiet as he made his way down the street. The wind from the sea was fresh and sweet.

would rather sb.did sth.
6. A
如选择A、C项,需去掉of。
8. C

9. C
10. A
12. A
13. A
16. B

18. A
19. A
before表示“在……
21. B
22. A

23. A
