第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
Flying over a desert area in an airplane, two scientists looked down with trained eyes at trees and bushes. After an hour’s flight one of the scientists wrote in his book, ‘Look here for probable metal.’ Scientists in another airplane, flying over a mountain area, sent a message to other scientists on the ground, ‘Gold possible. ’Walking across hilly ground, four scientists reported, ‘This ground should be searched for metal. ’From an airplane over a hilly wasteland a scientist sent back by radio one word: ‘Uranium.’
None of the scientists had X- ray eyes: they had no magic powers of looking down below the earth’s surface. They were merely putting to use one of the newest methods of locating minerals in the ground……using trees and plants as signs that certain minerals may lie beneath the ground on which the trees and plants are growing.
This newest method of searching for minerals is based on the fact that minerals deep in the earth may affect the kind of bushes and trees that grow in the surface.
At Wastson Bar Greek, a brook(小溪) six thousand feet high in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada, a mineral search group gathered bags of tree seeds. Boxes were filled with small branches from the trees. Roots were dug and put into boxes. Each bag and box was carefully marked. In a scientific laboratory the parts of the forest trees were burned to ashes and tested. Each small part was examined to learn whether there were minerals in it.
Study of the roots, branches, and seeds showed no silver. But there were small amounts of gold in the roots and a little less gold in the branches and seeds. The seeds growing nearest to the tree trunk had more gold than those growing on the ends of the branches.

I came to live here where I am now between Wounded Knee Greek and Grass Greek. Others came too, and we made these little grey houses of logs that you see, and they are square, It is a bad way to live, for there can be no power in a square.
You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. In the old days when we were a strong and happy people, all our power came to us from the respectful circle of the nation, and so long as the circle was unbroken, the people were getting rich. The flowering tree was the living center of the circle, and the circle of the four quarters nursed it. The east gave peace and light, the south gave warmth, the west gave rain, and the north with its cold and strong wind gave strength and continuous power. This knowledge came to us from the outer world with our belief. Everything the Power of the World does is done in a circle. The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. Birds make their nests in circle, for theirs is the same as ours. The sun comes forth and goes down again in a circle. The moon does the same, and both are round. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves. Our places were like the nests of birds, and these were always set in a circle, the nations circle, a nest of many nests, where the Great Spirit meant for us to nurse our children.
But the Wasich (Indian word for white people) have put us in these square boxes. Our power is gone and we are dying, for the power is not in us any more. You can look at our boys and see how it is with us. Where we were living by the power of the circle in the way we should, boys were men at twelve or thirteen years of age. But now it takes them very much longer to be fully - grown.
64. According to the passage, the Indians________.
A. dont have modern instruments in their homes
B. refused to move from round places
C. lived in round places, but were forced to live in square houses
D. lived in round places, but then decided to move into square houses
65. Two things being compared in the passage are________.
A. the Indians past and present living conditions
B. the Indians past and modern beliefs
C. the Indians old and new power
D. people and nature
66. In the second paragraph the four quarters refers to ________.
A. the four rooms of the Indians house
B. the four kinds of natural power
C. the four seasons
D. the four directions
67. According to the author, once the Indians moved into square houses, ________.
A. they had to move to other houses
B. boys took more time to grow into men
C. they forgot the old way of life
D. everyone was not happy
Work is a very important part of life in the United States. When the early Protestant immigrants(新教徒移民)came to this country, they brought the idea that work was the way to God and heaven. This attitude, the Protestant Work Ethic(道德规范),still influences America today. Work is not only important for economic benefits, the salary, but also for social and psychological(心理的) needs, the feeling of doing something for the good of the society. Americans spend most of their lives working, being productive. For most Americans, their work defines(给……下定义)them: they are what they do. What happens then, when a person can no longer work? Almost all Americans stop working at age sixty - five or seventy and retire(退休). Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, some people are happy to retire; but leaving ones job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Many retirees do not know how to use their time or they feel lost without their jobs. Retirements can also bring financial (economical) problems. Many people depend on Social Security checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income. These checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty - five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation(通货膨胀)is forcing prices higher each year; Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expenses. The government offers some assistance(补助), Medicare(health care)and welfare(general assistance), but many senior citizens have to change their life styles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel and other necessities.
Of course, many senior citizens are happy with retirement. They have time to spend with their families or enjoy their hobbies. Some continue to work part time, others do volunteer(志愿)work. Some, like those in the Retired Business Executives Association, even help young people to get started in new business. Many retired citizens also belong to Golden Age groups. These organizations plan trips and social events. There are many chances for retirees.
American society is only beginning to be concerned about the special physical and emotional needs of its senior citizens. The government is taking steps to ease the problem of limited income. They are building new housing, offering discounts(折扣)in stores and museums and on buses, and providing other services such as free courses, food service, and help with housework. Retired citizens are a rapidly growing percentage of the population. This part of the population is very important and we must meet their needs. After all, every citizen will be a senior citizen some day.
68. The author believes that work first became important to Americans because of________ reasons.
A. religious(宗教的) B. economic C. psychological D. family
69. The passage is mainly about________.
A. money and check B. senior and junior
C. work and retirement D. Protestants and Americans
70. When Americans stop work, its difficult for them to ________.
A. get Social Security checks B. feel productive
C. enjoy themselves D. be religious
71. The author mentions ________ examples of discounts.
A. two B. four C. five D. three
Seventeen years after breaking the gold medal drought(干旱) at the Summer Olympic Games, China hopes to realize a breakthrough by winning gold at the Winter Olympiad.
The chance will come in the 2002 Salt Lake City Games February 8-24. About 1,500 athletes from 80 nations will compete in the greatest show on snow.
We feel confident(有信心) and will try to end the gold medal drought, Duan Shijie, vice director of the State Sports General Administration, said recently.
China made its debut(初次登台) at the Winter Olympiad in 1980. It reached a new height in the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan bringing home six silvers and three bronzes.
China hopes to break the gold drought with excellent performances in figure skating and womens freestyle skiing.
Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, who finished third at the 2001 world championships and won two World Cup series in pair figure skating this season, are one of the best hopes for China to strike gold.
Xu Nannan, silver medallist at the 1998 Winter Games, is another gold hopeful in the freestyle skiing event.
China will send at least 69 athletes to Salt Lake, competing in seven events including short track speed skating, speed skating, hockey, figure skating, freestyle skiing, biathlon and cross-country skiing. We are hopeful to reach the target, much more hopeful than at any other previous Winter Olympiads we have taken part in, Duan said. We still are not on a par with the winter sports powerhouses(强有力者)” Xiao Tian, chief of Chinese winter sports, told Peoples Daily recently.
Xiao said that the geographies of Japan neighboring China contributed to performances of the Chinese athletes in the 1998 Games.
But in Salt Lake City, things will be different, he said.
There is a 15-hour time difference, and a great different in weather conditions. We will compete at an altitude of between 1,000m and 2,500m above sea level, said Xiao. It will be tougher to reach the gold than in the last Winter Olympics, said Xiao. China won its first gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984.

A. the Indians past and present living conditions
B. the Indians past and modern beliefs
C. the Indians old and new power
D. people and nature
